Hitchin 20 Welwyn 15
Hitchin bounced back from a disappointing defeat at Ruislip with a resilient performance against Welwyn.
The visitors started much the stronger, and with the wind on their backs and a stronger scrum in these early stages, took a 10 point lead in as many minutes, with a touch down from a 5 metre scrum by Ash Dobney, and
minutes later another powerful scrummaging effort resulted in a try for Dave Wells
Hitchin were awarded a penalty inside the Welwyn half, Ben Wiggins finding touch in the 22 metre area; the lineout was won, and mauled to the line for flanker Fred Rooney to score Hitchin's first points
A sweeping move was finished in the corner by No. 8 Frazer McGown to level the scores after half an hour. Hitchin withstood heavy pressure with 14 men to maintain parity to half time.
With the wind in their sails, Hitchin’s fly half Ben Wiggins played a territory game, and after 10 minutes put the side into the lead with a penalty.
An enforced change to the Welwyn pack ended their dominance in the pack, and a Hitchin rolling maul proved unstoppable once again, winger and captain Phill Ryan scoring Hitchin's third try, converted by Wiggins for a 10 point lead.
Welwyn came roaring back but the Hedgehogs' defence held firm time and again
An unconverted Welwyn try in the corner from Scofield made for a thrilling conclusion, with an excellent 10 minute defensive effort by the home side bringing a deserved victory
