| Hitchin U16 49 v Ealing U16 5 »
An impressive 8-4 win against Biggleswade, first win of the season, was not enough to secure our first home triangular series of the year that also included Stevenage, who won the event.
Hitchin 8 v 4 Biggleswade
Hitchin started the match with seven of the players that went to the Barnet Festival, and the early stages of the game were fairly even against a disciplined Biggleswade side.
Initially Hitchin's tackling was not effective enough but the players realised this and redoubled their efforts and quite literally swarmed over Biggleswade picking off ball carriers (Alex, Elliot, Hamish, and Sam, well done) - there was also try saving, diving tackles from Harry, David and Joshua. The effect of the tackling meant that Biggleswade kept getting bogged down, and turned over.
Hitchin's attack was as ferocious as it defence with plenty of direct running, good passing and excellent support play; wherever our ball carriers went there was always players in support, which meant we had options. It was from this supporting play that a number of our tries were scored.
Well done everyone for your efforts, this was by far the best game we have played this season, and is the standard we must set for ourselves for the remainder.
Team: Alex, David, Elliot, Hamish, Harry (C), Joshua, and Sam.
Tries: David 3, Harry 2, Alex 2, and Elliot 1.
Stevenage 8 v 3 Hitchin
We didn't have enough players to field two teams so David was invited to make up the numbers in this match against some of his mates from Stevenage.
With six Hitchin players having never played before it wasn't surprising that a good Stevenage side were able to build up a score quickly. However, Hitchin's heads never dropped and there was more, good tackling from Amelia, Ben, Henry, Oliver, and a thumping one from Harry.
There were three first-rate tries from Alex, Jordan and Sam, and there could have been more but our supporting play was not so good in this game and is something to work on in practice.
A good effort everyone; well done.
Team: Amelia, Ben, David (C), Harry, Henry, Jordan, Oliver.
Sub: Alex for David.
Tries: Alex 1, Jordan 1, and Sam 1.
Stevenage 4 v 4 Biggleswade
As the score line suggests this was a close match with Stevenage getting an equaliser with almost the last play of the game? With one win and a draw Stevenage piped Hitchin to take the honours.
Looking ahead to the remainder of the month we have training next week at 10.30 am as usual, and a home tie against Leighton Buzzard on 29 October.
And finally I’d like to thank Tarby and Adrian for looking after the u6’s, Mark for helping out against Stevenage, and all parents for their support.
See you next Sunday.
