Hitchin u7's met two very different teams in Wendens Ambo and Royston in an unexpected triangle match where we were unlucky not to come away with two wins.
Hitchin 6 v 4 Wendens Ambo
Wendens Ambo, who we were not expecting to be playing, are not a big team but they moved the ball round well and kept hold of possession for long periods.
Despite this, it was clear from the Off that Wendens were going to have their hands full with a strong Hitchin team whose tackling, ball distribution, and powerful running was some of the best we have seen from this improving side (it certainly got parents, very excited).
However; even with Hitchin getting up quick on the restarts and frustrating Wendens runners with some fine tackling, Wendens held onto the ball well, which is why they were only 4-0 down at the break.
In the second half Hitchin eased off, which allowed Wendens back into the game. But a good try from Oliver, and one excellent try from Elliot sealed the victory. Alfie and Joshua also scored, and David’s direct running saw him bag two more tries.
This match will be remembered for an authoritative first half display, some good tries, and some very good tackling from Alex, Ben, the two Harry's and Sam.
Team: Alex, Alfie, Ben, David, Harry.D (C), Elliot, Joshua
Subs: Harry.L, Oliver, Sam (for Alex, Alfie, David)
Scorers: David (2), Alfie (1), Elliot (1), Joshua (1), Oliver (1)
Hitchin 5 v 5 Royston
This was a close fought match with both sides putting in strong running displays. Hitchin probably just edged Royston with their supporting play however, we had two tries overruled for diving over and dropping the ball (instead of standing and applying downward pressure with both hands), which cost us the match.
Harry.L, David, Jordan and Joshua all scored good tries, and there was one memorable effort from Harry.D.
Harry picked up a dropped ball by his own Dead Ball Line, and with plenty to do, ran the length of the pitch with Royston in hot pursuit to score in the corner.
We mustn’t forget Alfie, Alex, Ben, Johnathan, Oliver and Sam whose tireless tackling and supporting play gave Hitchin the platform to play.
Overall this was a good game against tough opposition where we tackled and supported well. A good effort everyone; well done.
Team: Alfie (C), David, Harry.D, Jonathan, Jordan, Oliver (C), Sam.
Subs: Alex, Ben, Harry.L (for Alfie, David, Harry.D).
Scorers: Harry.L (2), David (1), Harry.D (1), Jordan (1), Joshua (1)
A few points from the game
Excellent tackling from everyone; you got up quick and frustrated your opponents.
We were pulled up a couple of times for being offside, but we’ll work on this in training
We lost our bearings occasional by running backwards or sideways. Remember, run forward and straight at all times, looking for support.
Quote of the day
When Royston’s coach asked me if Wendens Ambo was ok, I replied, “It’s a bit early for a pint!”
Next Sunday (Remembrance Sunday)
We are at home training commencing at 10:30 am, as usual.
See you on Sunday
