Sudbury Colts 14 v Hitchin Colts 16

« Hitchin U16 15 v Hemel U16 7 | Main | U12’s Match report – Hitchin Vs St.Neots »

What a super advertisement for cup rugby as this game had it all, climaxing in a last minute penalty kick to win the game.

First half Hitchin played into the wind so keep it in the forwards and played the better rugby but it was Sudbury who scored first with a penalty try.

A lack of tackling on the No. 6 enabled him to run down the right wing & kicked on, the chasing player was tackled with out the ball, penalty try, 7 nil down when we should be leading.

Hitchin came back and after some good forward play Henry Robinson went against all the coaching rules ran back towards the forwards instead of the gap in the backs and from 8 meters out cut back to crash over the line to score under the posts.

David King converted 7 – 7 at half time.

Second half and Hitchin were on the attack from the off, David King kicked an easy penalty to make the score 7 – 10 and things were looking good with Hitchin playing the better rugby.

Sudbury made a couple of changes which seemed to lift them and then after a number of errors from Hitchin it was Sudbury who scored with a well worked forwards try. 14 – 10 down despite playing the better rugby.

Hitchin plied on the pressure and with the wind behind them seemed to be encamped in the Sudbury half. At this point Hitchin were getting a lot of the ball and the only way Sudbury could stop them was to brake the laws of the game.

After yet another penalty awarded to Hitchin the captain made the decision to start kicking at the posts. David King put one over, 14 – 13 with loads of time to go.

It was not long before Hitchin had another penalty, up stepped David King again but for some reason he missed the posts and you got that fleeting that things were not going to go our way.
With 5 minutes to go another penalty to Hitchin 7 meters out in front of the posts, but a rush of blood to the head and they ran it and failed to score.

Last attack of the game yet another penalty to Hitchin 35 meters out, all eyes fell upon David King (3 out of 4 kicks this game) did he want to go for it - “Last play of the game said the ref.”

As up he stepped you could hear a pin drop, (Dad could almost not look) but over it went David King disappeared under a heap of players and subs at the ref. blew up for time.

“Gutted” said one of the Sudbury coaches.

“I was not worried” said a smiling David King after the game “you just kick and hope for the best” must go down as the quote of the week.

Hitchin now go to North Walsham in the next round which is next Sunday.
