Due to heavy rain the night before this game was pushed out to pitch No. 3 as it was the best of all the pitches at Hitchin.
Mud and lots of it with rain in the air, wind blowing down the ground from the west, you just knew it was not going to be a day for champagne rugby.
The game was played in the Fullers’ half of the pitch for most of the first half with Hitchin pressing forward but not getting any reward for their efforts. Hitchin had a kick at the posts with a penalty but the ball looked heavy and did not get off the ground.
After some good forward play, Hitchin were awarded a penalty about 6 metres out on the right. A quick thinking Pieter Frisch tapped the ball and ran for the gap to crash over for the first score of the game. Conversion was missed.
Just before half time Fullerians, with the help of Hitchin not making the tackles, almost scored but good defiance keep them out and Hitchin cleared their lines.
Half time 5 nil.
At the start of the second half the wind had dropped but the pitch was cutting up so things were not going to get any easer.
A strong forwards drive again made good headway and within inches of the Fullerians line Hitchin crashed over in a heap under which was Big Sean who had touched down to score yet another try.
David King kicked the conversion. 12 nil.
Despite the Fullerian’s backs been constantly off side and not getting penalised for it, Hitchin were playing the better rugby.
Fullerians did get on the score sheet with a converted try which made the last 10 minutes a bit nervous for the coaches and 'fans' on the touch line.
A final score of 12 - 7 sees Hitchin through to the semi finals of the county cup for the first time in a long while.
Hitchin should play better than this next week when it’s Fullerians at home again, this time in a league match.
