A new week and new problems before the start of this friendly game, no ref. due to illness. So James had to do the job in the middle as Chris was working.
Steve Bush did a coaching job from the sideline and we kicked off @ 12.30 just as the under 15 were leaving the pitch.
Hitchin kept it in the forwards and it was starting to look good as they got on top of the game.
Now we all know our forwards don’t like to give the ball away, but sometimes you do need to pass to the backs so they don’t get cold, but this time “keeping it tight” paid off. From just outside the Newmarket 22 the forwards drove their opponents back across the try line with big Shun getting the credit for the try. Dave King kicked the conversion.
The game was played most of the time in Newmarket’s half and after a number of failed attempts to score it fell to Pieter Frisch to do what Wales could not do later that afternoon, cross the line and score in the right corner.
Half Time 12 – nil.
Newmarket kicked off the second half and upped their work rate in an attempt to get some points, but it was Hitchin in the shape of Eddy who with the help of the forwards got the next try. 17 – nil.
After a number of errors by Hitchin and despite some good defending Newmarket scored a well worked try. 17 – 5.
Then we had the try of the game according to a number of backs. Just outside the Newmarket 22 Sam Wilson did a cross pitch kick to the right corner to wear Ziggy (Tom) made a fine catch and scored. 22 – 5.
Eddy got his second try of the game under the posts just before the end, David King converted.
A nice day out in the sunshine with Hitchin not getting into top gear, need to up the work rate next week with the visit of Tring.
