Hitchin 2nds 17 v Datchworth 2nds 19

« Teams Selected for Saturday 15th September | Main | U8s - WEEK 3 TRAINING »

Hitchin 2s went into this game with a slightly shuffled team (including a few players who were expecting a run-out with the 4s) looking to build on their spirited performance last week.

Again the emphasis was to be on a wide game, looking to move the opposition's larger pack around the pitch. A tactic not made any easier by having to play forwards in the backs, though credit where it's due, the players playing out of position more than held their own, especially Joe Benucci who played centre, wing forward and hooker! From the off we looked the faster, sharper team with Stuart de Wolf leading the way with several trademark surging runs - and was suitably rewarded with two tries in the process. Unfortunately a few individual errors, a couple of missed tackles and an over eagerness to take the ball into contact rather than passing to a colleague in space meant that we lost the match 17-19 when at times we looked much the better rugby team (aside from the line-outs that were a bit scrappy and the scrums where their larger pack certainly had the edge, to say the least, though they got away with deliberately wheeling too easily). The pack worked well in the loose, with particular credit to Man Of The Match, Sean McGinty, who caused the opposition a lot of problems and scored a deserved try. The other points came from a conversion by Iggy who would have had more of an impact on the game (and probably scored more points) had we looked to pass the ball more rather than running into contact quite so much. A special Bitch Of The Match award goes to Dale Baines for his constant 'chat' with several members of the opposition whilst I must thank Mr Greedy (Club Chairman) for his supportive comments and observations (as well as the jug of beer after the game!).
