A big well done to all the players involved at Letchworth. The team did really well during the day and surpassed my expectations. We played 4 matches, won 2, drew 1 and lost 1, but the most pleasing aspect was how the team improved throughout the festival to a point where in our last game we played some excellent attacking and defensive rugby. All the players contributed and it is a great starting point for the rest of the season.
1st Game v Letchworth: Lost 6-5
This was a good start to the tournament and we were unlucky not to win this match. The team started well and we were leading at half time 4-2 with tries by Naomh (2), Ethan B & Sam. There was good support play by Dylan and excellent tagging by Henry in his first competitive game for the club. In the second half Letchworth outscored us 4 tries to 1, although we unfortunately had 3 tries disallowed for players diving over the try line to score (this is something we need to remember for future!!!!!). Our try was scored by Connor and was a good team try with some fine passing and supporting.
2nd Game v Letchworth (B Team): Won 4-1
Our second game was due to be against Stevenage but unfortunately they did not have enough players to field a team, so we played a friendly match against another Letchworth team. In this game you could see there was a better understanding between the players and they were starting to work together more as a team. The first half was close and there was only one score by Ethan B, which was an excellent solo try from near our own line. However, in the second half we had more ball in attack and there was some very good passing and supporting by Holly, Milly and Dylan which created tries for Naomh, Ethan B & Sam.
3rd Game v Royston: Drew 5-5
This was an excellent game against the eventual winners of the festival and we came from behind to get a well deserved draw. It was a close game from start to finish and there was never more than one score between the teams. In this game I was particularly pleased with our defence and there was some excellent tagging from Ethan L, Laurence, Connor & Dylan. At half time we were behind 3-2, but we had scored two excellent tries by Connor & Naomh. In the second half we played really well and there were further tries for Connor & Ethan B (2).
4th Game v Datchworth: Won 7-3
This was our best game of the tournament and the whole team played some really good rugby. There were some excellent tries from Ethan B, Naomh & Sam in the first half, with some good team defence and tagging by Holly, Milly and Henry in particular which made the score 3-3 at half time. The second half was really impressive – our defence was excellent as we kept tagging and pushing forward which created mistakes by Datchworth. This resulted in us having more attacking ball and we created four very good team tries for Connor, Ethan B (2) and Naomh. It was a great way to finish the day.
Overall this was an excellent day and I was very pleased with how all the players performed.
Congratulations go to Connor Dudley who was awarded with the ‘Player of the Week’ award. Connor performed really well in all matches, he scored tries, did some excellent support play and made a number of excellent tags. He also captained very well in the third game against Royston who were the eventual winners of the festival.
I would also like to say well done to Henry and Ethan L who played their first competitive games for us and I hope they enjoyed themselves.
I do have some photos from the day and I will post these up on the website in the next few days.
