Sunday 7th October - Milton Keynes

« Sunday 7th October | Main | Hitchin 3's 24 v Harlow 4's 0 »

Another fine performance at Milton Keynes this week and the standard of play for only our second fixture of the season was excellent – well done to all the players. We won both our main matches against Milton Keynes and Kettering and then also played another two shorter duration games which we drew and won. So in total for our mornings work we had a played 4, won 3 and drew 1 record.

Game 1 v Kettering: Won 4-3

This was an excellent start to the day against a good Kettering side. The team started the game really well with some good running and support play in attack by all players, especially Naomh, Sam, Holly and Guy. There were two excellent individual tries by Connor & Sam and then a well worked team try for Naomh, which resulted in us leading 3-1 at half time. The second half we had to defend a lot more and there was some very good tagging by Connor, Dylan & George. We then finished the match strongly and Connor scored a good team try at the end.

Game 2 v Milton Keynes: Won 8-1

This was a really good team performance in both attack and defence, which resulted in us scoring 8 tries and only conceding 1. The team again started well with all players beginning to see the open spaces on the pitch and play in those areas. We moved the ball well with excellent passing and support play from Alex, Ethan & Naomh, which resulted in good tries from Ethan, Dylan and Sam. There was also an excellent individual try from Holly. Our defence was also good with fine tagging by Connor & Ethan and we prevented Milton Keynes scoring in the first half so we led 4-0 at half time. The second half was the same with all players being involved in both attack and defence. There were four further tries, two good team scores from Connor and two good individual tries from Ethan & Dylan. This was an excellent all round performance.

Game 3 v Kettering: Drew 3-3

This second game against Kettering was another close match with both teams playing some very good rugby. We scored two good team tries by Ethan & Guy and there was and excellent individual try by Connor who picked the ball up from the ground on our line and ran the ball back to score. Again we defended well with good tagging by Guy, Sam & Dylan and in the end we were unlucky not to win as Kettering scored with the last move of the match.

Game 4 v Milton Keynes: Won 4-1

This was a good performance and another fine win to finish the day. We had to defend more in this game than our previous match with Milton Keynes and I was particularly pleased to see us pushing forward more in defence. This caused Milton Keynes to make mistakes and from one dropped ball Naomh did an excellent pick up and ran the ball back to score. There was good support and passing in this game by George & Holly, which resulted in a fine team try for Connor. We finished the game strongly and there were another two excellent individual tries by Ethan & Alex.

Tries: Connor (6), Ethan (4), Sam (2), Naomh (2), Guy, Alex, Dylan (2), Holly

Overall I was very pleased with how we played today. All the players are starting to look and run to the open spaces and we are starting to move the ball away from the Tag area with good passing & support. Our defence is improving and we are starting to push forward as a team, which creates less space for our opponents and results in them making mistakes.

I would like to say well done to Guy, George and Alex who played their first competitive games for us – I hope you enjoyed yourselves.

‘Player of the Week’ was again a tough decision as there were a number of excellent performances, but congratulations this week goes to Guy Honnywill one of our new players who won the award. It was great to see him play so well in his first match for us and I was particular impressed with his all round performance. His awareness on the pitch was excellent, he scored a very good try, made a number of tags and also passed and supported well through all the games.

Next week – Sunday 14th October there will be training at the club at the usual time 10.30.

Well done to all players again and I will see you at training next week.
