The U9 take the North Herts Rugby Festival at Letchworth due to their superior tackling. Confident tackling denied all our opposition on Sunday from long periods of possession culminating in three wins and a draw to lift the trophy. Letchworth were dealt a decisive defeat, which took them totally by suprise and rocked their confidence. Conversely the confidence in the Hitchin team soored. Over confidence was reeled in by Stevenage with whom we drew 1-1, although given another day the score should have come out our way due to the superiority of the tackling. Royston, who did well at the festival winning three age groups and being runners up in another were a strong team but as I was refereeing at the time in another match did not see how we overcame them 2-1. Bring on Datchworth, a confident team with a secret weapon. However the Datch team were rocked from the start when the secret weapon was up ended, the ball spilled in the tackle and from advantage Hitchin went one up. It rocked Datchworth as they were in a winit or binit situation, as we were, and they were tied in their own half for most of the match due to the sustained tackling. They eventually conceeded another try, Hitchin winning 2-0. It was fantastic to see the team tackling so confidently and enjoying it. It all goes to prove that if we get the guys doing this confidently and properly at this stage it will mean that injuries will be slight and infrequent - tackle half heartedly and that's when the accidents happen. The team should be incredibly proud of themselves as they gave a tackling lesson to the rest of North Herts. Well done.
