Watford U15 0 v Hitchin U15 39 (yes, that's 39)

« Hitchin Ladies 47 Milwall Ladies 14 | Main | Teams Selected for Saturday 20 October »

Anyway, we travelled to Watford for our first ever league match with our spirits high. Some people still had quite a high level of spirits from the night before anyway.

Watford 0 Hitchin 39 (yes, that's 39)

Tries : Rowan Metcalfe (2), Steven Merritt (2), Max Clayton, Aleks Bhowmick & Dominick Horn.
Cons : Steven Merritt (2)

I apologise now for not taking notice of the times & order of who scored the tries either. Something to do with England making the World Cup Final the night before.

After doing our best to get lost and go to Harrow we eventually found the ground which was packed with mini/junior sides playing their triangular fixture. We were banished to a postage stamp size patch of grass for the warm up. Now this is where the fun started. Watford coach to me, Pete & Chris "can any of you ref as the society ref has just cried off?". Pete was well volunteered by Chris & myself. Chris was still trying to steady himself by trying not to spill a cup of tea. I tried to run the line.

Game on...

1st Half

Hitchin started well and had the better of the Watford pack winning virtually every single scrum & lineout. Hitchin took the lead after about 10 minutes with a try from Rowan. Shortly after Hitchin again scored to make it 10 - 0. Watford were already at this point arguing amongst themselves and calling Hitchin rubbish (actually it was stronger than that but this is a family publication). Hitchin then took the game further away from Watford by scoring two further tries to make the score 20 - 0 at half time.

2nd half

An early try in the 2nd half killed Watford off & from this point it was all Hitchin with Watford rarely threatening the Hitchin line. Two further tries with conversions secured the win for the Hedgehogs. Throughout the 2nd half Watford were still arguing amonst themselves which is something Hitchin capitalised on. Hitchin stuck together giving each other support and took the game direct to Watford. (note to teams: don't argue with yourselves, stick together & be a team)

Throughout this game Hitchin produced superb scrumagging, rucking, mauling & lineout. Passing & running was the best we've ever seen with the moral of the game being "if you have the ball, the opposition can't score".

Low point 1 - Watford parents having a go at Pete while reffing (Pete + hangover + reffing = bad move) Low point 2 - Watford parents calling Terry "an old tart" - she objected to the "old" bit

Overall a great win for the boys considering we got beaten 54 - 0 at Hemel a few weeks ago. We look forward to building on this sucess & obviously winning our league. Surely we must be top?

Simon, Pete & Chris
