Colts 10 – St. Evenage 0

Oh yes !!! (Mr. Frisch’s quote of the week “ugly rugby gets results”)
The lads duly arrived having gained an extra hour of sleep – not that you could tell. On a cold and windy day they took to the field kicking off into the wind and immediately gave away a penalty

Some aggressive play by Stevenage pushed Hitchin back into their own half and onto the back foot but some inspired play involving some excellent passing gave Stewart the opportunity for a superb run down the line with a lovely pass to Sam Wilson. Not the time for a try due to some good defending by Stevenage but Hitchin kept up the pressure with a brilliant example of a driving maul. The opportunity arose for a penalty kick but the wind wasn’t having any of it. Play resumed with some exciting midfield rugby resulting in some lovely passing enabling Nugget to speed off on a ground gaining run with a cheeky little pass to Stewart who continued the run but was brought up short of a try by a high tackle. This was the beginning of a number of errors by Stevenage leading to penalty after penalty in Hitchin’s favour. Apparently it’s the football mentality. There was some excellent line out play from Dominic .. again … and he was generally very good at sneaking that ball away at every opportunity throughout the game. Stevenage came back with some big tackles bringing Barry down literally in mid flight - they also produced some excellent kicks which brought the game back to Hitchin’s half but good work by the forwards and superb runs and passing from the backs brought us right back to Stevenage’s 22. A lovely bit of inter-play by the Hitchin forwards allowed a well-deserved try by JP. Hitchin 5 – Stevenage 0.
Half time and Hitchin went straight into the attack with some excellent work by Nugget, Khalid, Rob and a cracking tackle by Sam. Hitchin’s lineout and some serious play by Dom led to a sneaky little dash for the line by Tom Lawman. Hitchin 10 - Stevenage 0.
Stevenage came back into the game with a new lease of life and gave away fewer penalties. They had an excellent kicker who kept gaining a lot of ground but our defence held. There was some super tackling from Hitchin with Nuts hanging on for dear life, Sam making a try saving tackle, some good quick passing down the line and some excellent runs all helping to keep Stevenage away from that try line. The final play of the game was a superb kick from Barry Crowe, virtually the length of the pitch which just made the corner in Stevenage’s 22. Excellent!
Man of the Match: Barry for his kicking – brilliant today – and for doing what he’s been told!!!!!!
This was a pretty good example of team play today. Keep believing in yourselves lads!
By your own correspondents Lois and Clarke Kent (he says Old Kent Road would be a more suitable name).
