Hitchin 40 V Old Abbotstonians 10

« U12s v Ampthill, 4th Nov. | Main | U11s at Ampthill - match report 4 Nov 07 »

Hitchin find their form to secure convincing win over Old Abbotstonians. Both teams started well, and after the first 10mins had each claimed 3 points from infringements in front of the posts.

Play continued back and forth with both sides having the opportunity for more points from penalties. Mick Jones duly converted Hitchin's but Old Abbotstonians reply just went wide of the posts. With their noses in front Hitchin began to find their form. With Doug Brooker and Simon Banner returning to the side, good ball from scrums and line outs resulted in the Hitchin backs really testing the OA's defence. Eventually Britain’s newest national Jimmy Scott scored after an excellent break from Jones. Hitchin maintained the pressure and once again, on the OA's line. Stewart Roberts took a short ball and helped by his fellow forwards ploughed over to score. Hitchin were rewarded with another penalty that just fell short. The resulting clearance failed to find touch and found the Hitchin Skipper Carwyn Morgan instead, who jinked through the defence to score. The successful conversion saw the home side leading 25 - 3 at half time.

Hitchin started the second half with the same passion as the first. Unfortunately the OA's captain required more of a rest and was awarded 10mins in the sin bin after a trip on the Hitchin fly-half. Vinnie Kevans made the most of the numbers flying down the touchline to be caught in the corner, but before being taken into touch he off loaded to veteran Aidan Barnett for the score.
Mick Jones secured another 3 points for Hitchin, and then used his boot for a chase to the corner, collected by Carwyn Morgan and then off loaded to Jimmy Scott for his second of the day.
OA's refused to give up, running it from deep. The tactic finally paid off and the OA's winger went under the posts. Both sides failed to score any more points and the game concluded 40-10.
Hitchin look forward to their battle against second placed Old Actonians next week, following this convincing victory.
