We welcomed a large Cambridge squad to King George V Fields on a bitterly cold morning.
Our normal reporter succumbed to frostbite so the following is written without the benefit of notes.
Hitchin B –v- Cambridge B. Lost 7 – 42.
(Try: James A. Conv: Charlie)
Although we had an excellent turn out of 23 players from our squad of 26, the missing 3 were forwards and this proved significant as we were under-powered in this department all day.
Cambridge soon showed themselves to be a well-drilled side that are good at re-cycling and we barely got our hands on the ball for the first 10 minutes. The second half was much closer as we held Cambridge to just two tries. James A pulled one back with a typically dynamic run and the backs showed some promise whenever they were able to get the ball. After one good passing move, Mitchell was unlucky to be adjudged to have a foot in touch as he crashed over, but Cambridge came back strongly and we finished the game on the back foot.
Hitchin A –v- Cambridge A. Lost 0 - 21
This was a rather more even game despite the fact that we were again out-muscled in the forwards and barely won a scrum. Cambridge moved the ball well and switched attack from one side to the other, but our defence held firm for much of the time. When we did have the ball we attacked well, but couldn’t maintain the pressure or convert it into points. In the end it was their dominance in the forwards that made the difference and at least two of their scores were a direct result of this.
Player of the week: James A
Don’t forget training on Sunday at 10.30am – plenty to work on! Don’t forget to train in other kit to keep your Hitchin shirts clean for the Guard of Honour at Sarries.
