Railway Rugby and a whole lot more…..

« Hitchin 2's 22 v Letchworth 2's 32 | Main | Team News »

The “Railway” Rugby proved good fun and got us thinking about staying in our channels. Eric will cover more about that in “Coaches Comments”. Thanks again to Jonathan for the SAQ – I can’t help but feel that Jordan is not even allowed to cross the lounge at home without walking sideways or lifting his leg over imaginary hurdles.
I still have some raffle tickets to give out, if you haven’t got some, I have some with your name on! Also we are missing some photos for RFU cards.
Finally, a coat was left behind, please let me know if it belongs to you.
'Coach's Comments'
Another excellent turn out by both players and parents, allowed us to split the group into Blues, Greens and Yellows.

Jon and Charles worked again on the Speed, Agility and Quickness (SAQ) with one group whilst the rest of the coaches (including new addition Chico - welcome) worked on a Railway Rugby game with the other two. We swapped around so everyone got a chance to jump over and through hurdles and ladders.

Jon and Charles were delighted with the efforts from everyone and we will include this in training sessions on a regular basis.

We started off the session on Sunday with some handling and passing skills to warm up and I was pleased how well these have developed. The CALLING for the ball is improving and the PASSING, remembering to hold the ball with the 'W', was a lot sharper - well done.

The 'bridge' game to PASS the ball across the pitch was particularly well done, and shows that you can spread out and still make the pass, thereby getting the ball across the pitch quicker.

We worked on DEFENDING in CHANNELS by HOLDING OUR POSITION and waiting for the attacker to come to us. You all noticed home much easier it was to defend and how many more tags you got, especially when we played 'Bulldog.'

This is the key way to STOP TRIES through PREVENTING SPACE for the attacking team by STAYING IN OUR DEFENCE (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) position (in our Channels) and WAIT for the attacker to COME TO YOU.

Against Hemel Hempstead on Sunday the channels won't be marked out, but imagine in your mind YOUR OWN CHANNEL and then STAY IN IT when we're defending.

All in all an excellent session with lots of effort and hard work - well done.

This week's Player of the Week is the reward for excellent performances over recent weeks. Eight tries last week for the Tigers against Cambridge and lots of effort on Sunday; plenty of scintillating runs, mean that the player of the week is Niall Mistry. Well done Niall - this is your first season playing the game and you have really developed well. Your forward running, and side steps are excellent and you're really starting to appreciate where you need to be on the pitch and to support your team mates. Very well deserved.

Thank you

Eric
