Ladies Reports New season brings resounding victory for Ladies - Hitchin 56 Kilburn Cosmos 5

After practising hard from mid July, the ladies were champing at the bit to test their fitness, new skills and organisation is a real match. Right from the kick-off, Hitchin were firing on all cylinders, running in three unanswered tries in the first 10 minutes.
To say Kilburn did not know what hit them was an understatement! To Kilburn's credit they plugged away and kept trying, running in a try after uncontested scrums had to be brought in due to Hitchin's dominance and power, which was a wake up call to Hitchin. Hitchin started tackling and being more solid in defence and gradually turned up the heat. There were some injury problems though the strength in depth in the squad meant we had 4 players on the bench all ready to perform and team play did not suffer when the team had to be adjusted. All the new squad members got plenty of game time and were among the scorers - well done to Sharon, Sally, Mihikore and big Kerry W for training hard and fitting in well. It was such an all-round team performance that the ten (YES 10) tries were run in by 9 different players, with Kerry W adding a conversion to make it ten different scorers.
Tries came from: Zoe, Mihi, Lorranie (x2), Rachel, Sarah, blonde Kerry W, Amanda, Lucinda and Sally.
Conversions came from Amanda, Mihi and big Kerry W.
It would not be a ladies match without the usual sayings not normally heard on a rugby pitch:
"A maul is no place to be when you're breast feeding." (though fair play to the Kilburn player for playing at all)
"Substitute me, substitute me, I'm busting for a wee...." (at least she did not go behind a tree like a bloke!!)
The players were kind enough to acknowledge the difference a good pre-season of coaching has made but no coach can do it for them on the pitch and the Ladies should be proud of how they put practice and theory into reality and played very well. Even better, they recognised that they can still improve more at tackling and the contact area - so they could get even better - and will deserve to for their work and willingness to improve.
A very chuffed Tim Bonnett
