Please ensure that all players are registered (and paid of course) and that you have a RFU card including a photo. I have spoken with most of you regarding this but if in doubt please ask me. These do not need to be renewed every year.

The St. Neots player was okay and was not kept in overnight. No damage was sustained from the original fall but it turned out that he had a broken nose sustained in the first game we played!

Match Reports – Hitchin RFC v St Neots – Sunday 11 October 09

Game 1

1st Half Team Selection: Harry L, Joseph, Alfie, Harry D, Niall, Elliot, Matthew, Ben L, Oliver.

St. Neots started strongly and all the initial play was deep into the Hitchin half. The Hitchin defensive line held firm with some excellent tackles by both Harry D and Ben L. Despite some key last minute stops on the try line by captain Harry L, the visitors managed to push across in the corner to claim their 1st try. Hitchin fought back straight away moving quickly through the phases. A searching run by Harry L supported by Oliver resulted in some quick Hitchin ball to Niall. Excellent rucking by Harry D then delivered a final pass to Elliot who dived over to draw the score level with a well earned try. Hitchin started to grow in confidence and were now starting to dominate the game with excellent speed and movement from both Niall and Matthew. A scrum 5 metres from the St. Neots line saw Harry D punch through the defence to score and put Hitchin into the lead. St. Neots fought back but were held at bay by multiple tackles from Niall against some large opposition. Hitchin went into the break with a well deserved lead 2 – 1.

2ND Half Team Selection: Alex, Liam, Ben J, Oscar, Rhiann, Jonathon, Jacob, Laurie, Zac.

The team talk from the St.Neots coach clearly made a difference and the visitors were on the front foot in the 2nd half, scoring a try after 2 minutes. Despite this early set back, Hitchin countered well with some good running by Rhian and Alex. The home team couldn’t hold onto the ball long enough to develop a sustained attack and St Neots scored 2 quick trys. Hitchin defence worked hard with some strong tackling from Liam and Zac in particular. Accurate handling by Ben J and Zac released Hitchin into the opposition half on a number of occasions but the St Neots defence held firm. The 2nd half score of 5 trys to St Neots was not an accurate reflection of the strong Hitchin team performance who fought hard throughout.

Game 2

1st Half Team Selection: Niall, Harri, Finn, Samuel, Ben S, Oliver, Charlie, Jacob, Daniel.

A good match with 2 well balanced teams. Hitchin started extremely well and put pressure on the opposition right from the whistle. Some excellent passages of play and good handling saw Hitchin pressurise the St Neots try line with some strong drives from Finn, Harri and Jacob but they were continually stopped in the final play. The Hitchin performance was marked by good line-outs and quick passing. St. Neots were constantly a threat and only a massive try saving tackle from Niall prevented an early lead. Towards the end of the half the Hitchin defence missed a number of tackles resulting in 2 St Neots scores. Hitchin continued to fight and work methodically through phase after phase displaying some good teamwork and excellent decision making. A strong 1st half from a Hitchin team who are clearly starting to develop lessons learnt in training into game situations.

2ND Half Team Selection: Ben L, Alex, Elliot, Harry L, Matthew, Alfie, Niall, Joseph, Harry D.

Hitchin gelled together quickly in the 2nd half under the stewardship of Harry L and driven forward by quality ball from the scrum from Elliot. A powerful early run by Harri D fed the ball to Elliot who passed finally to Harry L to open the scoring demonstrating good decision making. St Neots pressed hard and gained some ground but the Hitchin scrum worked well, held firm and tended to control the game. An excellent counter attack set up by Elliot allowed Alfie to run almost the entire length of the pitch to cross for Hitchin’s 2nd try. Niall was a constant menace to the St Neots defence and weaved his way through for a good individual try following an accurately timed pass from Harry L. Hitchin continued to move the ball well and displayed some encouraging ability in rucks. Harri D was the work horse of the squad and managed to pick up a loose ball before driving over for try No 4. St Neots started to weaken slightly in the latter stages and Elliot demonstrated good turn of foot to score 2 trys in quick succession supported well by Harry L. A strong team performance, good handling skills and vision from Hitchin.
