| U12 VIKINGS AWAY TO CHESS VALLEY RFC »
A chilly but fine morning for the final matches of 2009, with the Saxons at Royston (with Biggleswade there too) and the Vikings heading to Chess Valley. The Saxons put the wheels firmly back on, after last week’s blip against OAs.
Squad Dan B, Ollie P, Ollie Red, Ben, Matthew, Christian, Aless, Benji, Ashley, Frazer, Daniel C, Bradley, Tom B, Tom S, Conor.
Game 1 Royston 5 v Hitchin Saxons 21
Tries Ollie Red, Ashley, Daniel C. Cons Benji 2, Daniel C, ??
A superb start, as we score within 4 seconds, straight from the kick off. Surely the quickest prop in history, Ollie Red, chases up well to score a Royston fumble of the kick. I think Benji converts, but these twins get everywhere and are hard to pin down. Bradley shows excellent reactions to secure a ball on the ground (not something we are renowned at doing well) and following excellent movement down the line, Ashley gets in for the 2nd with Daniel C converting (?) Ollie Red charges upfield at high speed, scattering R players as he does and we tackle really well in midfield to thwart their attempts to get into the game. 0- 14 at HT. We now give them a chance and they take it gladly, 5 -14. We commit yet another high tackle and give away a promising position, before Ollie P demonstrates perfect body angles taking the ball into contact. A lesson for all there. Tom too shows good skills in tidying up a kick and Benji shows some good kicking to the corner. Ben makes a strong run, eventually leading to a score by Daniel C, which brother Benji converts (I think) In the final play, we kick ahead well, but a R player runs it back strongly, only to be denied by a cruncher from Tom, dragging the big lad down by his ankles. A great riposte to last week’s disappointment.
Game 2. Hitchin Saxons 26 v Biggleswade 0
Tries, Daniel C 2, Bradley, Ollie Red. Cons Tom, Daniel C, Dan B
An excellent result this, expertly reffed by our Colin McGown. Although Biggleswade are shorn of 2 players, Royston supply good replacements. Last time out against this team, was a heavy loss, but I gather they have lost a few players and we now were able to dish out revenge. The H kick off is chased well, with wingers Ashley and Bradley chasing and tackling well. Christian tackles well too and we start well. Some B pressure is repelled and after great hands by Ben, a supreme handler for a guy of his size (had to say that, Dad Paul gave me a lift!) Bradley gets over, with Tom converting, nearly taking out a passing motor biker on the road behind the posts, as he did so. HT Frazer runs back, showing great balance and then Christian bursts away from a ruck, feeding Aless making a great charge into the line. After great continuity and handling, we get Daniel C over, with him converting his own try (I think) Daniel gets over again following good work from Ben, but Tom, obviously distracted by his near miss with the motorbike and not wishing to put more traffic at risk, puts the con wide! Matthew and Tom S are slotting in very well to this team and Aless puts in a cruncher. With our lineout and scrum in fine form and the backs handling with assurance, we keep a grip on the game, with Ollie Red barging through to round things off. PROP DAN BARNES KICKS THE CON (I kid you not!) 26-0
Colin is able to wax more lyrically than at OAs last week and names the whole squad as players of the week, for their play. A great way to round off 2009. Cruncher (A reward of a Crunchie) is shared between Tom and Bradley, with Aless needing special mention too, I think. Training next week, with Santa hats a must have accessory for all players and parents!
