HITCHIN COLTS V BISHOPS STORTFORD COLTS

SUNDAY 25 th SEPTEMBER 2011 – NATIONAL CUP

TEAM : Stephen-Charlie-Josh, Tom J-Doogie, Stefan-Callum T-Adam B, Heine-Callum Mc, Tom A- Dom, Billy-Kieren C-Joe.

The almost perfect U17s turned out for their first competitive match for the Hitchin Colts. All the talk on the side lines was of predictions for the coming season and the fact that the Stortford pack looked huge, come to think of it so did their backs.

Early minutes were dominated by Stortford pressure and after 7 mins or so a penalty was awarded and Stortford notched up the first points of the day.                                                                     0 – 3

From the restart Hitchin were positive and played their quick ball incisive game that has served them so well. From one such quick phase Tom A. took the ball up and quick distribution from Heine allowed Callum Mc to beat 10 or 11 defenders and score our first try. Kieren C converted.  7 – 3

Again from the restart Hitchin were adventurous in their play and it was not long before Callum saw some space behind the rapidly advancing Stortford midfield and chipped over, he collected and off loaded to Kieren. From the ruck Heine found Callum Mc again and a long pass to Doogie allowed a simple pass to Tom A. on the wing and a second try inside the first 15 mins.                     12 – 3

The next 10 mins or so were all Stortford who spent most it in the Hitchin half. The Stortford pack were an extremely strong unit (thank god for the 1.5m rule, it saved Heine’s fingers). Several advancing phases by the Stortford forwards produced a try under the posts not before some excellent defence on the line by the Hitchin pack.                                                                         12 – 10

The restarts were good for Hitchin and pressure on Stortford allowed (this time) a turnover and from this a penalty. Callum found a good touch and the forwards secured the ball. Heine supplied Callum Mc  who took the ball in, Heine out again with a long pass to Josh who found the ‘ Hitchin winger’ with a great timed pass.

Some say he can plough an entire field with his face or that he always has spare pants in his kit bag, all we know is , he is the Doogie and this time he was that winger ( I said winger!). Hitchin’s 3rd try after 25 mins and an excellent conversion by Kieren.                                                                 19 – 10

The restart this time found Hitchin camped in their half as the Stortford forwards took control. The Hitchin scrum under extreme pressure resulted in scrappy ball, and we could not clear our lines. A penalty to Stortford and they elected to scrum again, however a fantastic blitz from the Hitchin midfield led by Tom & Dom gained a knock on and from the quick advantage ball Hitchin were awarded a penalty and the chance to finally escape their half.

Half time soon followed but not before a quick tap by Heine set Kieren loose down the right wing but a knock on in the tackle put pay to the chances of a 4th try.

2nd Half changes : Zander on for Joe and Stevie M on for Dom.

Almost from the restart Stortford spun the ball out and their centre ( Billy’s mate ) cut a super line through our defence and shrugged off a few despairing dives to score.                                     19 – 15

I’m not sure whether it was the half time oranges or some tactical subs but Stortford had stepped up a gear and a few phases of play up the middle of the park and a rather inevitable try resulted.

                                                                                                                                                                                19 – 20

The game was beginning to break down and both sides were able to run into space. With 15 left an injured Heine was replaced by Stevie M at scrum half and Edgar slotted in at centre.

The Hitchin loose play continued to impress, Callum T, Adam and Stefan were everywhere. A penalty at the breakdown was awarded to Hitchin, the ball seemed to fly up the field preventing a quick tap and one of those intellectual discussions took place between the the BS ( thats Bishops Stortfrod) back row and our very own speaking clock Mr Brian Baines. Apparently Brian was called an 80 year old, old fart. This is disgraceful, as I know for a fact that Brian is not yet 70. Callum took the shot.

                                                                                                                                                                                22 – 20

Stortford again continued to maintain possession and a sequence of penalties helped Stortford progress to the Hitchin 5 mtr line and despite some resolute defense ( the boys were looking exhausted by now) a try was scored.                                                                                                           22 – 27

5 mins left and Hitchin threw everything at Stortford, an excellent catch by Billy from the restart and it looked like the boys might pull it off. However the ball was lost in contact and Stortford cleared. Hitchin came back running but a costly turnover allowed Stortford a series of rucks, a penalty in the 22 and a try.                                                                                                                                                                22 – 34

A very tough encounter but with some excellent passages of play by Hitchin especially when you consider we have not had any full team game time or practice.

Credit to the Hitchin pack especially the front row.

Good to see BIlly back at his speedy best.

Also a mention to Callum T who again seemed to baffle the ref with his steals and turnovers.

Well done Stephen F, a well deserved MOTM.
